The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden by Jessica Sorensen

“Life is full of luck, like getting dealt a good hand, or simply by being in the right place at the right time. Some people get luck handed to them, a second chance, a save. It can happen heroically, or by a simple coincidence , but there are those who don’t get luck on a shiny platter, who end up in the wrong place at the wrong time, who don’t get saved.”
Jessica Sorensen, The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden

Synopsis:

Luck was not on Callie’s side the day of her twelfth birthday when everything was stolen from her. After it’s all over, she locks up her feelings and vows never to tell anyone what happened. Six years later her painful past consumes her life and most days it’s a struggle just to breathe.

For as long as Kayden can remember, suffering in silence was the only way to survive life. As long as he did what he was told, everything was okay. One night, after making a terrible mistake, it seems like his life might be over. Luck was on his side, though, when Callie coincidentally is in the right place at the right time and saves him.

Now he can’t stop thinking about the girl he saw at school, but never really knew. When he ends up at the same college as Callie, he does everything he can to try to get to know her. But Callie is reserved and closed off. The more he tries to be part of her life, the more he realizes Callie might need to be saved.

My Review of The Coincidence of Callie & Kayden
I was super excited for the release of this book.  I love Jessica’s other series with Ella & Micha so I expected good things from this book.
The opening of the book cuts to the chase very quickly.  Callie is sent to retrieve her brother from a graduation party at Kayden’s home when she stumbles upon something she isn’t supposed to see or hear.  She discovers a secret about the boy she has known since she was a little girl.  Kayden’s father is abusive toward him and she interrupts a fight that was quickly getting out of control.  What Callie doesn’t realize is that by interrupting the fight, she changed everything that night without even knowing it.
“That’s you. Callie, you’re the only person that’s ever made me feel happy about anything. That night you saved me, you changed something in me—you made me want to live.”
Jessica Sorensen, The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden
Callie has worked hard since her 12th birthday to be invisible to the people around her.  After the disastrous birthday party that changed her life forever she made a point to become emotionally and physically unavailable to everyone.  Callie cut her hair, wears goth style baggie clothing and takes the ridicule from the “popular” crowd.  Her father is the football coach so everyone know who she is.

Callie is now off to college and determined to start new.  She starts school in the summer just to get away from her past.  The first day of freshman orientation she gets quite the surprise when she runs into Kayden who she hasn’t seen since the night of the party.  Kayden is shocked to see her, she had changed completely from high school and now wore different clothes and hair style.  Kayden has wanted to talk to her since that nights to “thank her” for what she did for him.  A new chapter begins for Callie and Kayden that will change everything once again.

What I really enjoyed about this book was that it was so realistic.  Callie’s character does exactly what you would expect her to do after going through what she has in her life.  Kayden is strong but underneath he is a scared teenager trying to find his place in the world.  They are like any other teenagers that would struggle to cope with everyday hardships, growing up isn’t easy to begin with.  Callie is afraid to open up and Kayden is afraid of anything real.  The characters develop at such a normal pace it isn’t like it’s instant attraction and they are now madly in love with each other.  The progress of a relationships true development is captured in this book.

“In the existence of our lives, there is a single coincidence that brings us together and for a moment, our hearts beat as one.”
Jessica Sorensen, The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden

The ending was a quite a shock to me… Of course I knew going in that there would be a second book but I never saw what happens in the last chapter coming and boy was it one crazy ending!  Jessica’s talented writing kept me captivated and turning the pages into the middle of the night.  Callie and Kayden’s story will delight your sense, break your heart, mend it and break it again, that’s just the way it is with teenagers right?  I for one cannot wait to see what is in store for them in the next book The Redemption of Callie and Kayden due out in February 2013!  For a sneak peek visit Jessica’s blog site.
