My Review

This is the second book in the Surrender Series by Lauren Smith.  If you haven’t read the first book you probably should because it was truly excellent!  We know from the end of The Gilded Cuff that Fenn Lockwood was long believed dead, after the kidnapping of he and his brother ended with Emery’s return home and no hope that Fenn had survived. Emery harbored a long time guilt that he hadn’t tried harder to save his brother.  However with the threat on Emery’s life still at large, and the revelation that his brother is truly alive and well, there is a new target on both their backs.  After a fight with Emery and Fenn’s original kidnapper and his death he vowed that another would take his place and that he and his brother weren’t safe.

In a race against the clock, Hayden rushes to Colorado to be a hero.  Hayden is a long time friend of the Lookwood family, her brother Wes was Fenn and Emery’s childhood friend and he suffered tremendously with the loss.  Hayden is a typical rich girl on the outside, fine clothing, comes from the family that has insurmountable wealth, but on the inside she’s dying a slow death under the grips of her parents.  This is her shot to do something worthy and she’s not going to let anyone stand in her way, including the snarky, egotistical, Fenn Lockwood.  What Hayden doesn’t bargain for is that befriending Fenn and telling him the truth of his past would only put her in the line of fire as well.

This story has a lot of twist and turns,  the long awaited family reunion, the threat to Fenn and Emery’s lives, trucks flying off cliffs, an assassin with stealthy skills, a woman who’s trying to find her place in the world, a man who’s trying to understand his past, present and future.  This book had passion, shock, sadness, jubilation, danger and intense situations that will have you on edge.  All of that combined made for a great read.  I have to say my only criticism would be that the suspense and the assassin situation over powered the budding relationship between Fenn and Hayden, and their connection to me felt a little too fast and at times a little bit forced, however I did enjoy their story and I’m looking forward to her brother Wes’s upcoming story next!  If you like romantic suspense with a little kink in the bedroom then this is the series for you!  It all started with The Gilded Cuff and one woman’s mission to solve the Lockwood kidnapping case and it ended with Fenn Lockwood being found alive and well… The conclusion of this part of the story left me feeling completely satisfied in the end…
