A STARLET REVIEW: SCHOOLED BY PIPER LAWSON

Synopsis:

Twenty-one-year-old Alexis Caine is so close to her dream she can taste it. And it tastes like validation and Häagen-Dazs.

In a few months the quick-talking redhead will graduate with a shiny new business degree and launch a fashion label with her best friend Ava. All the planning, dedication, and saying ‘no’ to everything - and everyone - distracting will pay off.

Then Dylan Cameron, Ava’s tall, dark and broody younger brother, returns from the East Coast to start sophomore year at Lex's San Diego college. Lex has hardly seen him in years and given his reputation for partying and girls, that’s just fine with her.

But Dylan’s all grown up. And a night of unplanned confessions for both of them threatens to tear Lex’s carefully constructed world off its axis…

Because one sassy control freak + one prodigal son = chemistry that refuses to be ignored.

My Review

This debut author has some real talent for telling a story.  When I first read the synopsis for Schooled I was thinking it was going to be a little more of a forbidden story but it really wasn’t.  It’s a well written friends to lovers story in a way…  She’s known him most of her life and been BFF’s with his sister forever… So it was more of a hidden, secret lovers type story and kept you quite on the edge.  The synopsis flirts with you and so does Dylan Cameron!

When we first start out Alexis & Ava are embarking on their senior year of college.  Ava is a fashion design student and Alexis is a business major.  Their single goal is to launch their fashion design business by the end of this year.  That means all fun and no play makes senior year a bore.  They made a pact, no distractions.  What Alexis didn’t count on was a familiar boy from her past becoming her biggest distraction EVER.

Dylan is harboring some HUGE family secrets.  Everything that Lex thought she knew about Dylan, is pretty much a misconception, a facade built to protect those he loves most.  When Dylan and Lex come face to face at her birthday party bash, things quickly get intense between these two long time friends, and get out of control very quickly. He finds himself drawn to Lex in a way he’s never truly been.  Making him want to lay out all his secrets to her and refute her reasons for not wanting to get involved with him.   Dylan wants Alexis more then his next breath and he isn’t going to give up easily, even though she pushes him away at every turn.

Lust breeds rampantly between these two and quickly, that lust turns into a secret relationship.  Dylan find himself falling and falling hard for his sisters best friend and though he understands her need to keep the secret, but when he can no longer hide his feelings, things take some turns and Alexis finds herself truly between a rock and hard place.

I truly enjoyed this read, the beginning was a little bit slow, but once it got moving I was furiously flipping the pages.  My only issue was with the ending.  I know that Ava is going to get her book next but I did sort of feel like Alexis and Dylan’s story wasn’t quite over yet.  So hopefully we will see more of them in the future.  Dylan is very passionate and I loved loved loved his secrets and I’m not just talking about the one he is keeping from his family… He is soooooo sweet and he just literally made me melt at times.  Alexis infuriated me most of the time, she’s a good character and I understood her conflict but since I loved Dylan so much, it made me dislike her at times.  Over all this was a great first book by this new author, and I think she will be one to watch as her craft develops further.  If you love a sweet romance with a little angst, Schooled is a fantastic choice, you won’t be sorry!

About Piper Lawson

Schooled is Piper Lawson’s debut novel. Piper loves reading and writing stories about sassy, sexy, smart women and the guys who fall hard for them.
Piper’s main household expenditures include books, shoes, and chocolate, not necessarily in that order. Coffee = life (and she’ll defend it accordingly, especially when cornered). Piper has two business degrees, neither of which she’s leveraged into a fashion label.

Home is Canada plus occasional sunny winter escapes.
